Centers of Influence

Truly excellent leaders don’t have an off or off switch… they lead at work, at home, at church, etc. They invest their time in self-improvement and invest in the success of others… this follows the philosophy of one of my favorite authors and success speakers, Zig Ziglar… “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” Truly excellent leaders, therefore, don’t look at work as work. They look at it as a vehicle to enjoy life and share a bigger purpose.
As a leader, this is a question I have asked myself many times before… how can I use what I do on a daily basis to impact the lives of others? I believe there’s a perception in our society that in order to contribute to this world we must cure cancer, feed all the homeless, bring clean water to Africa, etc. Now don’t get me wrong, those are all great things that do deserve our attention and compassion. However, for folks like you and me, it’s just as necessary to identify and live out a bigger purpose here in our own local community. You can make a difference every day and touch the lives of everyone you meet right here at home. While our neighbors may not be starving physically, we can provide them with a different kind of nourishment that will feed their souls and feed our own as well.
I once heard of a janitor who worked at NASA and, even though he was sweeping floors, felt he was helping to put a man on the moon.
I met a bus driver who wakes up every day and gives every effort to help the kids he drives to and from school to stay off drugs.
I know a receptionist who self-appointed herself “Chief Smile Officer” in her office and makes it her goal to scatter positivity throughout her coworkers’ days.
I recently talked to a mortgage broker in town who says that her job helps couples save their marriages by keeping their homes.
The list goes on and on… Ordinary people with an extra-ordinary purpose.
Wherever we are, our bigger purpose is waiting for us to find it and live it.
I can’t tell you what your purpose should be, but I can tell you that everyone can find a bigger purpose in the job they have.
For me as an Insurance Agency Owner, I am able to see firsthand the power of what I do – helping people protect the things that matter most, including their families, homes, finances, and more.
Don’t wait to start living with a bigger purpose. Bring your mission with you to work, start working for a bigger purpose, and nourish others in the process. Remember, “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”
